Ecosystem-Based Adaptation and Mitigation in Botswana’s Communal Rangelands
The Government of Botswana through the Ministry of Agriculture in partnership with Conservation International (Botswana) is implementing the Green Climate Fund Ecosystem-Based Adaptation and Mitigation in Botswana’s Communal Rangelands Project in the three target project areas of Ngamiland, Kgalagadi and Bobirwa (covering Okavango, North West, Hukuntsi, Tsabong, Mabutsane and Bobirwa Administrative Districts) to restore vegetation in communal rangelands that are severely impacted by climate change and, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions over 8.5 years.
Financing
Project Finance: $97.6M in total
- $36.8 Million by Green Climate Fund (GCF) Grant
- $54 Million Co-finance from the Government of Botswana
- $6.8 Million Co-finance from Conservation International (CI)
Conservation International Botswana will work with Botswana Government, non-governmental organizations, private sector, academia, development partners and local communities to restore 4.6 million hectares of degraded land using the Herding for Health programme model for climate-responsive planning and management of the communal grazing areas. The Project was launched by the Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Fidelis Molao on 18th August 2022.
